It seems that Jews cannot celebrate a festival unless there is some sort of food associated with it. On Chanukah we eat doughnuts, on Rosh HaShana we eat apple and honey, and on Shavuot we eat dairy.
We’re not entirely sure what the relevance of dairy is to receiving the bible, but we can roll with it. This weekend, let’s celebrate Shavuot by eating our way through the best dairy dishes Tel Aviv has to offer.

“Artichoke hearts pasta” at Piccola Pasta
This intimate Italian restaurant hidden away on Ben Yehuda serves some of the best pasta dishes in the city. The al dente penne smothered in a creamy, buttery, garlic sauce and tossed with asparagus, tender artichoke hearts and juicy hearts of palm is simply mouthwatering.

“Risotto ai funghi porcini” at Il Pastaio
Risotto is one of those things that’s hard to get right. We were delighted to find that here, at the authentic family owned Il Pastaio, they succeed. Perfectly al dente and not too rich.

“Bianca pizza” at HaPizza
This pizzeria serves the best stone oven baked pizza. Amongst them is the amazing pizza bianca: a tomato sauce-less pizza with mozzarella, parmesan, feta, olive oil and parsley.

“Tivonina” at Meshek Barzilay
This vegetarian restaurant in Neve Zedek offers a range of organic, gluten free, and vegan options. Amongst these is an impressive assortment of vegan cheeses. The ‘tivonina’ platter consists of guacamole, garlic dill cheese, smoked onion cheese, and feta made of almonds, hazelnuts, and walnuts, served with focaccia. We know that vegans probably won’t be reading this post in the first place, but if you are- this one’s for you.

“Cheese Boureka” at Amikam
These flakey puff pastry pockets stuffed with salty feta cheese, served with a hard boiled egg, pickles and tomato salsa, really hit the spot. It’s no one wonder that this hole in the wall is busy for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

“Cheese sandwich” at Ligori Delicacies
This deli imports the best of the best, so it really is a cheese lover’s dream. They have many great dishes but our favourite is this cheese sandwich- Roman artichoke, South African pickled peppers, 3 special cheeses, truffles, thick balsamic vinegar, and Normandy butter. Back when this deli was just a small fromagerie, they would whip up this sandwich for their happy customers, and since then it has remained their staple item.

“Salmon and Mozzarella sushi” at Al HaMayim
This special roll is to die for. Cooked salmon and cucumber wrapped in salmon and melted mozzarella, topped with crispy fried onion flakes.

“Cachapa” at Arepa’s
This Venezuelan delicacy is sort of like a pancake except it’s made from corn flour, giving it a thick texture. At this stand in the Shuk, the cachapa is fried in front of you, then filled with grated cheese, and finally topped with a dollop of butter which almost instantly melts. We recommend sharing it with a buddy.

“Spicy feta brulee” at Dalida
This appetizer is seriously impressive. Creamy feta with a piquant kick, covered in a contrasting layer of burnt caramel, served with a loaf of freshly baked bread.

A butter croissant that can be filled with truffle paste, melted imported cheese, imported meats, and a perfectly poached egg. Let’s be honest, not much gets better than that.

“Cheesecake” at Delicatessen
This thick, creamy, New York style cheesecake is absolutely dreamy. The base is made of a delicious buttery biscuit base that will literally melt in your mouth. R2M, you never fail to impress us!

“Sugar coated bananas wrapped in Dolce de Leche” at Abraxas North
Eyal Shani always gets it right- hot soft caramelized bananas drenched in homemade dulce de leche, cookie crumbs and fresh whipped cream. Divine.

“Brûlée Porcini” at Fitzroy
This dessert is absolutely divine. Like the rest of the dishes at this chef restaurant, it is an adventurous mixture of flavours that just works. Crème Brûlée with Porcini mushrooms and milk chocolate mousse, caramelized powder, sesame and caramel served with miso ice cream.
